POV: Fiddle Styles Lecture!!!

The Fiddler’s POV: A Listening Guide to Fiddle Styles with Gretchen Koehler

Pack your (imaginary) bags and join fiddler Gretchen Koehler, your musical tour guide, for a journey across the wide world of fiddling. This interactive, multimedia experience goes beyond a typical lecture. With live fiddle playing, video clips, and fun listening challenges along the way, you’ll journey through fiddle traditions from the U.S., Canada, Europe, and beyond -exploring the sounds of each region from the fiddler’s point of view.

En route, you’ll learn to recognize the rhythms, ornamentation, and stylistic nuances that give each tradition its distinct voice. Whether you’re a listener or musician, this guided tour offers a rich sampling of regional and global fiddle styles, all from your seat at the Potsdam Public Library.

About the artist: Gretchen Koehler is a fiddler, performer and educator with an atlas of musical styles at her fingertips. She is a TAUNY Heritage Award recipient, North American Fiddlers Hall of Fame inductee (NY rep.), and a 2026 NYSCA Individual Artist Grant recipient. www.gretchenkoehlermusic.com

Annual Sugaring Off Party

People of all ages are invited to a musical and folk dance celebration of maple sugaring season! This free interactive concert followed by a folk dance will be presented by The Madstop Fiddlers of Potsdam, a multigenerational group of fiddlers, under the direction of North Country Living Traditions Award recipient, Gretchen Koehler. This popular family-friendly event will take place on Saturday, March 21st, 2-3:30pm at The TAUNY Center in Canton.

The Madstop Fiddlers will present a variety of toe-tapping old-time fiddle tunes that have been played in the North County for many generations. Throughout this fun, educational event, listeners will learn to play spoons, hear stories of French Canadian “sugaring off” parties, learn some Ottawa Valley “step dance” moves, as well as traditional folk dances.

Local maple producer Art Hurlbut of Hurlbut’s Maple will also be at the party to make wax-on-snow (a seasonal favorite) to share with guests. This event is free, but donations will be gratefully accepted.
