THE WAXWING

Gretchen Koehler & Daniel Kelly blend the energy of Celtic fiddling with the nuanced lyricism of jazz piano. On their debut CD The Waxwing, Koehler & Kelly play a wide variety of reels, jigs, and airs -some old, some new- that highlight not only Koehler’s powerful fiddling but her tremendous multi-string arrangements within the unusual matrix of Kelly’s jazz.

"Masterful" -Fiddler Magazine

"Best New Sounds" -Thistle & Shamrock, N.P.R.

I heard The Waxwing just as I arrived home from work today and was compelled to sit in my car until the last note was finished. I was enthralled.” -NCPR listener, Maitland, Ontario, Canada

PARALLEL LINES

Gretchen & Rebecca Koehler/fiddles, Brandt Kronholm/guitar, Beth Robinson/cello, Matt Bullwinkel/piano, Ed Clark/percussion, Joel Foisy/percussion, Stuart Kenney/bodhran

Parallel Lines captures the sisters' joy of making music side by side. The multi-string arrangements of Celtic and New England contra dance tunes are at times whimsical, rocky, sultry, pensive, and jazzy without the abandonment of strong traditional melodies.

"Two very important and virtuosic contributors to the sound of fiddling in the Northeast." -Fiddler Magazine

TRADITIONAL FIDDLING

The Koehler Sisters have a "sibling synchronicity" that brings duet fiddling to a new level. Their special bond was recognized in TIME Magazine and syndicated TV series, "On the Road with Charles Kurault" and "PM Magazine." In their teens, they won fiddle championships in nine states and three provinces. Traditional Fiddling (1992) was the sisters' first solo album.
